London Bridge
* Aside from the fact that we all know "London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down...", to be honest, I'm really not sure why the bridge is all that famous.  What we know today as the London Bridge likely isn't on the exact same spot where the previous bridges were, its just in the same area...  I'm guessing its famous simply because we all know the name, but either way it has an interesting history behind it.

* It has a long history, dating back to around 80 AD, when the first bridge across the Thames was built in this area.  The first bridges were made of wood, which is obviously less stable than its later stone versions.

* In 1209, a stone bridge was completed which lasted for over 600 years.  Throughout those years, an entire community, including houses, shops and even a chapel, was build on the bridge.  Much of this burned in 1633, and had to be rebuilt.

* The bridge was in such bad repair that in 1825, construction started on a new bridge 100 feet west of the old bridge.  When the new bridge was completed in 1831, the old one was demolished.

* By the 1960's, the bridge was cracking and settling into the river; work began on a new one in 1967.  This new bridge, the one we see today, was completed in 1973, and the previous one was taken down and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, AZ.  (Some rich guy there bought it for way too much money...  Why somebody would want it, I'll never know...)
